1 Chapter: Psalm 76
1 Verse: Verse 11. Make vows to the LORD your God and fulfill them; let all who are around Him bring gifts to Him who is to be feared.
1 Prayer: Father, forgive me for so easily forgetting my commitments to You. Teach me better how to fear You in such a way that the fulfillment of my vows to You -- all my promises of faithfulness, love, adoration, obedience -- comes from the very center of my being, not, as it sometimes seems to now, as if it were some fad only recently taken up and thus rather easily cast aside. I don't want to give You empty words or shifting allegiance -- true at one time and not at another. You are my God for all time, and I want to act like it. Help me be faithful to my vows.

Psalm 75
1 Chapter: Psalm 75
1 Verse: Verse 1. We give thanks to You, O God, we give thanks, for Your name is near; men declare Your wondrous works.
1 Prayer: Thank You, Father, for being near. You are always present and always working, and Your works are always wondrous. They quite literally make me wonder: what are You up to? I know it is all good, but sometimes You seem to be bringing me down, sometimes lifting me up. All I know is that You are close, at hand, intimately involved in all that concerns me and for that I thank You. You alone can be trusted to work all things for good. I trust You today in all things. I love You.

Psalm 74
1 Chapter: Psalm 74
1 Verse: Verse 16. Yours is the day, Yours also is the night; You have prepared the light and the sun.
1 Prayer: Father, every moment belongs to You. You have proven Yourself worthy of each one. Thank You for exercising Your ownership over my times. Thank you for preparing for me light to see and heat to warm and melt my frozen heart. Thank you for shining on me in the darkness of my need. You rose up like the sun to answer my cry for help in the night, and now I want to give You all the praise and honor and glory and thanks You deserve. Today, Father, is Yours -- as has been every day till now and as will be every day to come. May You be pleased by what Your light reveals of me today.

Psalm 73
1 Chapter: Psalm 73
1 Verse: Verse 26. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.
1 Prayer: Father, show me how to find the strength of my heart in You even when my own heart fails. I know Your strength is made perfect in weakness, but lately my weakness has been getting pretty strong. Too strong for me. I can feel my failure like never before. But I trust You, Father, and I believe Your word. This weakness, this failure, this flesh, this heart -- they are not forever. You are forever, and You will never fail. You will be my portion forever, despite it all. Thank You, Father, for Your unfailing love.

Psalm 71
1 Chapter: Psalm 71
1 Verse: Verse 15. My mouth shall tell of Your righteousness and of Your salvation all day long; for I do not know the sum of them.
1 Prayer: Father, even in the midst of waiting for word of Your answer to me, I will not stop talking all day long about how good You are. I can't presume to know how You will show Your righteousness and Your salvation in response to my requests. So save me from fret and worry as I foolishly fear the worst. I do not know the sum of Your good and saving deeds. You may yet still deliver me as I have asked. So, Father, please answer. And in the meantime, as I wait to learn what Your answer will be, I will praise You.

Psalm 70
1 Chapter: Psalm 70
1 Verse: Verse 5. But I am afflicted and needy; hasten to me, O God! You are my help and my deliverer; O LORD, do not delay.
1 Prayer: Father, I know You make all things beautiful in Your time, but I get impatient having to wait. I can't see how any further delay could possibly be helpful. I want to be delivered. But I know that You are my help, whether that help comes now or later. I know You are with me no matter what. Thank you for hastening to me to help me. I know the rescue is already underway.

Psalm 69
1 Chapter: Psalm 69
1 Verse: Verse 20. Reproach has broken my heart and I am so sick and I looked for sympathy, but there was none, and for comforters, but I found none.
1 Prayer: Father, You know me best. You know me better than anyone. You are familiar with all my ways. Only You could know how perfect this verse is for me today. I don't know what else to say, so I will let George Fox say it for me: "It grieved me that I should have opened my mind to such a one. I saw they were all miserable comforters, and this increased my troubles upon me" (Journal, Ch. 1). You alone can speak to my condition, Lord. You are the Comforter, come to dwell with Your people Yourself. I need Your comfort, Father. I need You.

Psalm 68
1 Chapter: Psalm 68
1 Verse: Verse 19. Blessed be the Lord, who daily bears our burden, the God who is our salvation. Selah.
1 Prayer: I'm the one who feels blessed, Father. To know that You daily bear my burden, that You take upon Yourself the weight of my finite, sin-plagued, ignorant, willful, stubborn, hapless existence is almost beyond comprehension. It seems almost too good to be true. Yet, in its truth is our salvation -- that You are a lover of sinful rebels Who delights in even the smallest, weakest, most insignificant blundering motions we fitfully make in response to Your infinite and perfect and unfailing love. Father, You know the things burdening me today -- even better than I do. And You are infinitely better able to bear them than I am. Thank You for carrying me through them today. For that You truly deserve to be abundantly blessed and thanked and worshiped and praised and loved and trusted and obeyed . . .

1 Chapter: Psalm 67
1 Verse: Verse 1. God be gracious to us and bless us, and cause His face to shine upon us-- Selah.
1 Prayer: Father, I would love to see Your face shining on me and my family, friends, church, city, country and world today. The light of Your countenance is pure blessing to us. Psalm 66
1 Chapter: Psalm 66
1 Verse: Verse 13-14. I shall come into Your house with burnt offerings; I shall pay You my vows, which my lips uttered and my mouth spoke when I was in distress.
1 Prayer: How quickly I "forget" how truly desperate I am. I do not want to be reminded of how precarious my position is, or how utterly dependent I am on You. Yet the truth is I would be nowhere if not for Your love and grace. I have been in distress, and I have been delivered . . . over and over and over again. And each time You lead me into trial, You refine a bit more of my soul. But I don't want to remember how dark my soul can be. The words I speak in darkness, I want to ignore in the light. Father, help me to prove faithful to the test. Help me to keep the promises made to You in my need, so that I do not have to go back there to make them all over again.

Psalm 65
1 Chapter: Psalm 65
1 Verse: Verse 1. There will be silence before You, and praise in Zion, O God, and to You the vow will be performed.
1 Prayer: Thank You, Father, for the silence that surrounds You. I'm beset on all sides by a cacophonuous chorus of dissonant voices all speaking, shouting, screaming, whispering words of shame, doubt, blame, regret . . . and You silence them all. I'm inundated with a flood of words. . . and yet none of them speak to my condition. You alone have the words of life -- real life, undying life, eternal life, unending life, self-sustaining life, self-generating life. To whom else shall I go? I will seek You in Your silence, then when I find You there I will adorn that silence with Your praise. I will perform for You -- before Your rapt attention -- the vows and promises, the commitments and pledges that I have made to You. May You be pleased with what You see and hear of me today.

Psalm 64
1 Chapter: Psalm 64
1 Verse: Verse 1. Hear my voice, O God, in my complaint; preserve my life from dread of the enemy.
1 Prayer: Father, my life is endangered not only by the enemy, but also by the dread of him. How often have I let fear alone do its damage before the enemy has even shown his face? If you will protect me from the enemy himself, how much more from my imagined fears? Father, forgive me for conjuring up scenarios to dread, excuses to hide behind, and fears to flee from. The enemy is real, but the reason to fear is false. You will uphold and defend me. Deliver us from evil and from the dread of it.

Psalm 62
1 Chapter: Psalm 62
1 Verse: Verse 8. Trust in Him at all times, O people; pour out your heart before Him; God is a refuge for us. Selah.
1 Prayer: Father, help me trust in You at all times. You know how I am longing for this time to be one of those times when trusting You comes easily. But it doesn't seem to be. Yet, I am pouring out my heart before You, because I trust You enough to believe that You hear and answer. You are my refuge. It is right that I trust in You. Father, help me trust You this time.

Psalm 61
1 Chapter: Psalm 61
1 Verse: Verse 2. From the end of the earth I call to You when my heart is faint; lead me to the rock that is higher than I.
1 Prayer: Father, my heart is faint. I'm calling to You, but my voice is faint, too. Please hear my call. I feel like my whole world is at an end. Where do I go when I've run out of room, when I've gone as far as I can go, when I've reached the limits of this earth and can go no further? I call to You to lead me. You alone know where I am and where I've been and where I'm going. I'm going someplace greater than myself, someplace bigger than this earth, someplace larger than my world. You are the place of strength, security, shelter and rest. You abide forever above it all. Let me abide forever with You.

Psalm 60
1 Chapter: Psalm 60
1 Verse: Verse 1. O God, You have rejected us; You have broken us; You have been angry; O, restore us.
1 Prayer: Thank You, Father, for the hope of restoration. Nothing could be worse than to have been rejected, cast off, rebuffed by God. No one can more perfectly break us than the One who created us. And yet, even in Your anger -- perfect and just and righteous as it is -- You still receive our request. You remember us, You restore us, You put us back together again. You put us back together with You. O, Father, restore us!

Psalm 59
1 Chapter: Psalm 59
1 Verse: Verse 16. But as for me, I shall sing of Your strength; yes, I shall joyfully sing of Your lovingkindness in the morning, for You have been my stronghold and a refuge in the day of my distress.
1 Prayer: Father, I'm looking across the dark expanse of this night toward the hope of light in the morning, but it is so hard to tell how the day will rise. Will I awake with a song or a curse? Will I rise to the fond memory of a pleasant dream, or the sour aftertaste of a bitter nightmare? If I wake to the day of my distress, Father, will You be my stronghold and safe place? Help me sing of Your unfailing lovingkindness no matter what tomorrow brings. Yes, I shall joyfully sing.

Psalm 58
1 Chapter: Psalm 58
1 Verse: Verse 7. Let them flow away like water that runs off; when he aims his arrows, let them be as headless shafts.
1 Prayer: Father, when lying voices pour out discouragement over me like a deluge, will You please help it roll off my back? When I'm the target of criticism, distraction, defeat, and despair, could you please soften the blow? Take the edge off. I know I need to learn to endure under it, to stand up to it, to not back down from it. But I'm tired and the hits just keep coming. I'm looking to You to keep me on my feet. Thank you.

Psalm 57
1 Chapter: Psalm 57
1 Verse: Verse 3. He will send from heaven and save me; He reproaches him who tramples upon me. Selah. God will send forth His lovingkindness and His truth.
1 Prayer: Father, my hope is in You this morning. Send from heaven Your lovingkindness and Your truth, and save me. Save me from those who trample me, and save me from trampling on myself. I bear Your reproach for it. Show me how to get out from under condemnation, criticism, rebuke and shame, and to stand instead beneath the over-abundant grace You have for me in Christ. I need Your grace to fall upon me from heaven. And please help me to give the same grace freely to others.

1 Verse: Verse 8. You have taken account of my wanderings; put my tears in Your bottle. Are they not in Your book?
1 Prayer: Father, You know where I have wandered. You know how each of those tears in Your bottle got there. You know what tears I'm adding to them tonight, and why. Your bottle runneth over. Please hear and answer. I can't make this happen on my own. I need You. Thank You.

Psalm 54
1 Chapter: Psalm 54
1 Verse: Verse 6. Willingly I will sacrifice to You; I will give thanks to Your name, O LORD, for it is good.
1 Prayer: Father, just as true as it is that "there is no one who does good, not even one" (Ps 53:3), it is truer still that You are the single solitary exception. You alone are pure goodness. Your name itself is synonymous with good. Why wouldn't I willingly sacrifice at any cost to give You thanks? You do not keep Your goodness to Yourself. You do not hoard and hide it. You expose it blatantly, You offer it freely, You lavish it abundantly on those who deserve it the least. Thank you, Father. Today help me be like You. Whatever good I receive from You -- and it is all good, every good and perfect gift -- allow me to freely give it to others just as You do, without exception.

Psalm 53
1 Chapter: Psalm 53
1 Verse: Verse 3. Every one of them has turned aside; together they have become corrupt; there is no one who does good, not even one.
1 Prayer: Father, You know I cannot argue with this verse. I've turned aside, I've become corrupt, I'm up to no good. And yet, despite the fact that there is absolutely no one -- no single solitary person -- who does any good whatsoever, You still make a distinction between those no-good scoundrels You call Your people and those You do not. And the only difference is Jesus Christ. We who believe gain the credit of the righteousness of Christ, while those who do not run the risk of having to pay their infinite debts from their own finite account. Father, it is only by grace that I'm saved from that nightmare of condemnation. And it is Your desire that all would be saved. Help me to be more like You -- One who does not condemn the corrupt, the unrighteous, the evildoers, but offers us hope, peace, restoration and a chance at a fellowship with You we could never merit, earn or deserve on our own.

1 Verse: Verse 23. "He who offers a sacrifice of thanksgiving honors Me; and to him who orders his way aright I shall show the salvation of God."
1 Prayer: Thank you, Father, for Your salvation. I know it comes as the result of a great sacrifice -- the ultimate sacrifice -- of Your Son Jesus. And all You ask of me in return is a sacrifice of thanksgiving. I will not withhold from You what You so perfectly deserve. Psalm 49
1 Chapter: Psalm 49
1 Verse: Verse 8. For the redemption of his soul is costly, and he should cease trying forever--
1 Prayer: Father, how often do I try in vain to secure my soul through my own efforts? And yet each time I do, I fail. There is nothing in me that can afford to pay what I owe for my sin -- and not only my sin, but for all the good gifts You give me -- my life, my family, my friends, my faith. These are things I could never purchase through my own power. They all come freely from Your hand. Teach me to stop trying to earn them through my efforts or pay for them through my own ill-conceived penance. You have already paid the full price to redeem my soul because You knew I could not pay it myself. Thank you!

1 Chapter: Psalm 47
1 Verse: Verse 7. For God is the King of all the earth; sing praises with a skillful psalm.
1 Prayer: Father, You reign over all nations and peoples. There is no earthly power -- political, economic, military -- that is beyond the reach of Your authority. It is to You we owe our full allegiance, and if we do not give it freely we will pay it dearly. May I give You today and every day what You most deserve: the very best of all the skill and power -- however small it may seem -- that You have given me, for the glory of my God and King.

Psalm 46
1 Chapter: Psalm 46
1 Verse: Verse 2. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change and though the mountains slip into the heart of the sea;
1 Prayer: Father, You know how much I do not like change. And when the changes are big -- when it seems like the very foundations of my world are about to come undone, and the highest points trade places with the lowest -- that is when I start to fear. And yet, You remain my ever-present help. No changes are too big for You. Psalm 45
1 Chapter: Psalm 45
1 Verse: Verse 10. Listen, O daughter, give attention and incline your ear: forget your people and your father's house
1 Prayer: Father, just as You ask me to remember You and Your works, You ask me to forget my own people and family. I need You to help me "forget" -- not that I would literally neglect them, but that I would not value their opinions or expectations of me over Yours. Just like You say that a man and a wife leave their father and mother and cleave to one another, You ask me to answer no longer to anyone else, but only to You. Forgive me for placing the expectations and opinions and approval of others above Yours. Help me today to live for Your pleasure and Yours alone.

Psalm 44
1 Chapter: Psalm 44
1 Verse: Verse 1. O God, we have heard with our ears, our fathers have told us the work that You did in their days, in the days of old.
1 Prayer: Thank You, Father, for the memories of Your saints. Thank You for passing from one generation to the next the testimony of how You have worked. Thank You for faithful witnesses who remember the ways of Your goodness and grace and speak about them to us. But why must we always only hear just with our ears? Why can't we see it for ourselves? Why does it sometimes seem that Your greatest works are confined to a time long past? When will our generation know Your mighty hand and witness Your gracious deeds? What tales will we tell the next generation of Your love and power? Help me, Father, to become a faithful winess to Your works in my days.

Why does it sometimes seem that Your greatest works are confined to a time long past? When will our generation know Your mighty hand and witness Your gracious deeds? What tales will we tell the next generation of Your love and power? Help me, Father, to become a faithful winess to Your works in my days.

Psalm 43
1 Chapter: Psalm 43
1 Verse: Verse 3. O send out Your light and Your truth, let them lead me; let them bring me to Your holy hill and to Your dwelling places.
1 Prayer: It's dark this morning, Father. And not just from the waning days of summer or the Monday 'blues'. There is an oppression that is closing in, like enemies on every side. When I am surrounded, when there is no way out, I need You to guide me through the darkness so I don't stumble and fall. I need You to show me the way. I need You to send me Your light and Your truth, and I need to follow them. I need to let them lead me, let them bring me to the place where You are, to the heights upon which I am safe from attack. Lead me today, Lord, and I will follow.

Psalm 42
1 Chapter: Psalm 42
1 Verse: Verse 6. O my God, my soul is in despair within me; therefore I remember You from the land of the Jordan and the peaks of Hermon, from Mount Mizar.
1 Prayer: Father, is memory a cure for despair? Doesn't it only make things worse to recall how much closer I felt to You then? These places take me back; they stand out in my mind as high points in our journey together -- when You carried me across the river at flood stage out of long desert wanderings into the land of rest and plenty that You'd promised. Or when You led me to a height of strength, a fortress of defense, a refuge against all enemies and tore it away from my foes and handed it over to me. Those are the times I long for, the places I'm so glad we have been together. Won't remembering those moments of joy only magnify my current despair by comparison? Yet, Lord, I remember.

1 Chapter: Psalm 41
1 Verse: Verse 1. How blessed is he who considers the helpless; the LORD will deliver him in a day of trouble.
1 Prayer: Forgive me, Father, for being inconsiderate of others more helpless than myself. I fixate upon my own troubles and neglect Your promise to help those who help the helpless. Show me today someone to whom I can be a helper.

Psalm 39
1 Chapter: Psalm 39
1 Verse: Verse 13. Turn Your gaze away from me, that I may smile again before I depart and am no more.
1 Prayer: Father, You are the righteous Judge of all things. You see me in all my vanity and sin and selfish, self-righteous self-importance. There is no hope for me beneath Your perfect gaze, except insofar as You see me in and through the righteousness of Jesus Christ. Then and only then is Your gaze filled with infinite compassion, without a hint of eternal condemnation. Your eyes smile when they behold the extravagant passion of Your love for me in the life and death and resurrection of Jesus. And I smile again, too -- deliriously, almost disbelievingly -- that Your loving gaze beholds me as perfect and acceptable in Your sight.

Psalm 38
1 Chapter: Psalm 38
1 Verse: Verse 9. Lord, all my desire is before You; and my sighing is not hidden from You.
1 Prayer: Father, You know my every desire. Some of them are good, and draw me near to You. Some only lead me further away. But the drama of all my wants and longings -- both those met and those unmet -- is played out right in front of You. As much as I may wish to deny it, I can't hide my sighing from You. So help me carry my wants to You and lay them openly at Your feet, so You can satisfy those that please You and I can sacrifice those that don't.

Psalm 37
1 Chapter: Psalm 37
1 Verse: Verse 6. He will bring forth your righteousness as the light and your judgment as the noonday.
1 Prayer: Forgive me, Father, for my impatience. It is so hard to wait, and I begin to fret, when I look about and see how dimly the light of my own righteousness shines. It seems to barely creep over the horizon like the faintest glimmer of dawn. It is almost imperceptible. Yet You promise me the full blazing sun at its midday zenith. How can this be but through the righteousness of Christ granted to me as a gift of faith? Thank you for bathing me in the full glow of His perfect and complete righteousness instead of my own shadowy substitute.

Psalm 35
1 Chapter: Psalm 35
1 Verse: Verse 1. Contend, O LORD, with those who contend with me; fight against those who fight against me.
1 Prayer: Father, I'm not always aware of the fact that I have an enemy who is dead-set against me. I see flesh and blood in the earthlies when instead I should see principalities and powers and spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenlies. I need You to be my defense. I need You to take up the fight on my behalf. Help me today to resist that which would draw me away from you and into a battle I cannot win on my own. Thank you for having overcome the world.

Psalm 33
1 Chapter: Psalm 33
1 Verse: Verse 18. Behold, the eye of the LORD is on those who fear Him, on those who hope for His lovingkindness,
1 Prayer: Father, I know Your eye is upon me, not to spy out my mistakes and failures but to look for ways to show me your kindness and love. That is my only hope -- that You would be gracious to me in my weakness. And "behold!" -- You are! You've proven beyond all shadow of doubt that whatever it is that You see when You look at me is somehow worth saving, even at the cost of the life of Your Son. I don't understand it, Lord, but I hope for it anyway. Thank you, Father, for being so kind.

1 Prayer: Thank you, Father, for being unwavering in Your commitment to me. Even when my faith is weak and I fear the worst, You prove me wrong by proving Yourself faithful. Your love truly is unfailing. Today I celebrate being held secure in the arms of Your love that will not let me go.

Psalm 30
1 Chapter: Psalm 30
1 Verse: Verse 9. "What profit is there in my blood, if I go down to the pit? Will the dust praise You? Will it declare Your faithfulness?"
1 Prayer: Father, it's incredible to think that You might profit in any way from my life. You are unlimited in Your infinite resources, while all I have and all I am already comes from You. Yet You have made this a non-zero-sum world. You are benefited, it is to Your advantage, whenever I praise You and declare Your faithfulness. Psalm 29
1 Chapter: Psalm 29
1 Verse: Verse 11. The LORD will give strength to His people; the LORD will bless His people with peace.
1 Prayer: Father, is it really Your voice that is stripping the cedars of Lebanon bare? Does strength only come from military force? Is peace only achieved through violence? Your people are on all sides, on both sides, on neither side, surrounded by enemies, entangled in governments, victimized by history, oppressed by economics, paralyzed by politics, yet still You bless us with peace that passes understanding. Our world seems able to understand only one kind of peace -- peace bought with weapons of war. We need Your miraculous, other-worldly, incomprehensible peace instead.

1 Verse: Verse 12. My foot stands on a level place; in the congregations I shall bless the LORD.
1 Prayer: Father, if I stand, it is only because of You. You are my level place, my secure footing, my foundation, the Rock that never shifts, shakes, falters or fails. I don't have a leg to stand on. I am weak, weary, wounded, wobbly and woebegone. Yet You support me, You sustain me, You hold me up and do not let me fall. What else can I do but praise and thank You?

Psalm 25
1 Chapter: Psalm 25
1 Verse: Verse 7. Do not remember the sins of my youth or my transgressions; according to Your lovingkindness remember me, For Your goodness' sake, O LORD.
1 Prayer: Thank you, Father, for remembering me, and for not remembering my sins, even though they sometimes seem to be the most memorable part of me. Thank you for remembering me even when I sometimes forget you in the busy-ness of my day, the weakness of my flesh, the selfishness of my heart. Thank you for remembering me not according to the judgment I deserve for my forgetfulness but according to Your lovingkindness.

1 Chapter: Psalm 23
1 Verse: Verse 3. He restores my soul; He guides me in the paths of righteousness for His name's sake.
1 Prayer: Thank you, Father, for bringing my wayward soul back to You again and again and again. Whenever I go astray on wrong paths, You guide me back to right ways and You enable me to see how much better Your ways are than all others.

Psalm 22
1 Chapter: Psalm 22
1 Verse: Verse 24. For He has not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted; Nor has He hidden His face from him; But when he cried to Him for help, He heard.
1 Prayer: Thank you, Father, for not shrinking away in horror from the pain, suffering and distress of Your people. If You hid Your face, it would only compound our misery. Forgive me, Father, for turning my back on the afflicted. You do not judge or despise. Instead, You listen. Help me do the same.
