1 Passage: 1 John 3:19-24
1 Verse: Verse 20. in whatever our heart condemns us; for God is greater than our heart and knows all things.
1 Prayer: Thank You, Father, for being greater than my heart. That doesn't sound like much of an accomplishment -- my heart is so small and weak and willful. But that is precisely why I am so incredibly grateful that You are greater. My heart fails me sometimes. It fails You sometimes. Sometimes it is full of condemnation -- of myself, of others, of You even. But You are greater. You know all things. You know that there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. You know that includes me. You are the Good Shepherd who knows Your own sheep. I'm sorry I let my heart get away with its condemning spree. But when it does, I praise and thank You that I am not overcome by what my heart condemns. Instead, You in Your greatness have overcome my heart, and I love You for it.

1 Prayer: Father, You are worthy of all praise. You are near and far. You abide in me as a temple of Your Holy Spirit, and You fill all of creation to its most distant extent. You are on high and You are down low. And I am so thankful, since I seem to be everywhere and in between. Thank You for being here now. I praise You for Your presence in me and around me. I will praise You today as I remember Your nearness.

Psalm 149
1 Chapter: Psalm 149
1 Verse: Verse 4. For the LORD takes pleasure in His people; He will beautify the afflicted ones with salvation.
1 Prayer: Thank You, Father, for making me one of Your people. The difference that makes in my life and in Yours is difficult to fathom. Considering how ugly and painful I and my afflictions seem to be, it is rather incongruous to think that You take pleasure in me and make beauty out of them. I know You have given me salvation, and I am thankful. And though alienation from You is the biggest affliction anyone could ever face, it still doesn't mean that with that settled I don't suffer these others. And I need You to save me from them, too. Sure, I'll survive if You don't. I'll still love You and praise You and serve You. But what I want most is for You to hear and answer me about this need. Beautify this situation, please. I know Your grace is sufficient for me to live on in affliction. But Your power is sufficient, too. Show us some of that power on our behalf, please.

1 Verse: Verse 13. Let them praise the name of the LORD, for His name alone is exalted; His glory is above earth and heaven.
1 Prayer: Father, let me praise Your name. You alone are higher than all other things, even the things that oppress and discourage me. That makes me think that maybe You might remove some of them. You certainly are able to do so. So why don't You, Father. Wouldn't it be nice to relieve some of the pressure down here? If You did so, You know I would praise You even more. You know I would exalt Your name and give You all the glory. So why don't You? Obviously, You don't need any more glory and exaltation. You are as high as You can go. But what about what I need? Don't I need an answer here? It sure feels like I do. Yet, what if You withhold Your hand? What then? I have no where else to go. And You know I am going to praise You no matter what. Help me to praise You no matter what.

1 Verse: Verse 3. He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.
1 Prayer: Father, if my bones were broken, I'd go to a doctor. If my body was sick, medicine might help me. Even if my thoughts were not right, a counselor, a therapist, a psychologist might do. But brokenheartedness is a sorrow and a wound too deep for human healers. My heart is the very core of who I am. It isn't some part of me that needs to be fixed; it is me, all of me. The very depths of my being, the entire existence of my life from its beginning to this moment right now has gone all askew. Who will straighten it out again for me, if not You, Father? You made me. You have been with me the entire way through. I know You will make a way for me now. I don't know what it is, but You have to do it. Because I don't know what it is, You have to do it. 1 Verse: Verse 5. How blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the LORD his God.
1 Prayer: Father, You are our help. You are the one we are looking to and trusting in. You are the one we cry out to when it seems all hope is lost. We hope in You. And that makes us blessed. That makes all the difference. Apart from You there is no hope, there is little we can do. But with You, You say we can do all things for nothing is impossible with God. Well, sometimes it seems like what we're asking for is the impossible. Sometimes it seems like what we're asking for should be the simplest thing in the world. Either way, we are asking You because we know that all good things -- large or small, possible or impossible -- come from You. Help me to bask in my blessedness today. The blessing is not in having the things I hope for or the help I need, but in having the Helper in whom I hope for those things. Forgive me for sometimes wishing I had the other things instead. You are my portion forever. I love You.

1 Prayer: Father, please open Your hand to us. We have laid all our desire out before You. You know our longing. You are intimately aware of our hope and wish. We wait for You to satisfy us with good. Yet sometimes it feels like the open hand is a slap in the face. Sometimes it feels like instead of an open hand, we get a closed fist. I know things aren't how they feel. I know You know so much better than I do how to give good gifts to Your children. We trust in Your wisdom to give us good in Your best time. 1 Prayer: Father, I don't know if I am supposed to be encouraged or frightened by this fact. I feel my life fading away. Is time on my side, or against me? I guess it really shouldn't matter. I guess the important thing is that You are on my side, and if You are for us, who can be against us? But why are we still waiting, Lord? Why are so many prayers yet unanswered? So many promises unfulfilled? And time is so short. Father, please consider my frailty. Unlike You, I can't wait forever. I need You now, and if not now, then soon. Come, Lord Jesus. Come quickly. 1 Prayer: Father, we need Your lovingkindness this morning. Lately, our mornings have been cruel; the day begins with doubt and disappointment and unrealized hopes. We trust You; we lift our souls to You. We place our very lives and selves into Your good hands. And while we are thankful for Your unfailing love, we can't help but admit there are other things that we also wish would not fail, yet do so -- over and over again. We know You are teaching us the way to walk, but it is a dark and lonely and rugged way right now. We want a change of scenery. Please, Lord, in Your wisdom and love, kindly give us what we ask.

And, Father, when You do, I will give thanks to You. I will no longer be surrounded by walls and bars and locked doors, but the righteous will surround me. Instead of a prison cell to hem me in, You will give me the freedom of a community of people who love You, a family of those who trust in You. Father, You are making this happen. Help me to trust You to see it through.

1 Verse: Verse 8. For my eyes are toward You, O GOD, the Lord; in You I take refuge; do not leave me defenseless.
1 Prayer: Thank You, Father, for providing me a refuge of eternal security. Thank You for defending me when I have nothing with which to defend myself. You know I am guilty. I have no case. I have no leg to stand on. By any measure I deserve to have the book thrown at me. But instead I get the best defender, the fairest trial, the lightest sentence -- no sentence at all, full acquittal. I don't know how You do it except by grace, for love, in kindness and mercy. My eyes are toward You so that I can see that love always and learn to live it myself in honor of what You have done for me. Thank You, Father.

Here I am in the midst of the day of battle and I need strength. I need saving. Thank You for giving me cover. Help me to know when to keep my head down and when to rise up and move out.

1 Verse: Verse 12. Even the darkness is not dark to You, and the night is as bright as the day. Darkness and light are alike to You.
1 Prayer: Father, I guess I shouldn't be so afraid of the dark. If it is all the same to You, then couldn't I just have a bit more light? But whether I walk in light or darkness today, Lord, I am thankful that You walk there with me. I can't understand why You would have me stumbling about where I can't see, yet that's how it is. That's how it is going to be, and I have to learn to be okay with it. Teach me to know that You walk beside me even in the midst of darkness. Thank You, Father.

1 Chapter: Psalm 137
1 Verse: Verse 4. How can we sing the LORD's song in a foreign land?
1 Prayer: Father, teach me how to sing Your song in the midst of this land where I live. It is not my home -- my home is in heaven. This is a foreign land, a far country, in which I am but a pilgrim and a sojourner. I am in this world, but not of it. Is that why it is so hard for me to get comfortable here? Does that explain my unhappiness? I want to know peace -- Your peace -- and I know it has to come from You. In this world I have trouble, but You have overcome the world. Overcome my troubled spirit, Father, and grant me peace. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. Here I will sing Your song.

1 Verse: Verse 1. Give thanks to the LORD, for He is good, for His lovingkindness is everlasting.
1 Prayer: Father, we are so thankful for Your goodness. Nothing else matters except that Your lovingkindness is everlasting. Your enduring love makes alll things endurable. Your unfailing devotion makes my failures not nearly so frightening. Your unbroken covenant makes my broken heart mend as I trust and find you faithful again and again and again. You are good, and I want to live a good life of great thanksgiving to You. Thank You for this day with which I have to live. Thank You for all the ways in which Your life is poured out into my heart through Your Spirit in me. May I refelct some fo the same goodness and love to those around me today.

1 Verse: Verse 6. Whatever the LORD pleases, He does, in heaven and in earth, in the seas and in all deeps.
1 Prayer: Father, we are praying that You would do as we please. We're praying that whatever pleases You would also please us. You chose to be our Father. You chose to be a Father who hears. And so we are praying, knowing that You are listening. And we're wondering what You are doing, what You are going to do. Please, Father, may You in Your grace and wisdom grant us what we ask in such a way that we are both pleased -- You and us. If this thing we're asking for pleases You, then we know it will be done. Father, we're asking in faith, trusting in Your good pleasure, that You would be pleased to hear and answer and grant our request. We love You!

1 Prayer: Father, may we please behold the goodness and pleasure of life in community with one another. Help us to live out the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. Let those who are lonely and those who are in conflict all come together as one to find a common life of loving and serving You. May we learn that loving and serving one another is loving and serving You. Thank You, Father, for being bigger than all our differences. Thank You for making us diverse, so that our unity can be all the more beautiful, rich, and strong. Thank You that the blessings of community come from You.

1 Verse: Verse 14. "This is My resting place forever; here I will dwell, for I have desired it.
1 Prayer: Thank You, Father, for resting Your Spirit upon me forever. You dwell in me as I abide in You. I don't understand how You do it. I can't comprehend why You do it, except that You love me. You have desired to be with me, within me, close to me forever. Even before I desired to be near You, You had given Your Son to die to make it possible. I am so thankful that Your nearness is based on Your desire and not mine. You know I desire it, but my desire is weak, fickle, untrustworthy. I trust in Your love for me.
