Psalm 150

1 Chapter: Psalm 150

1 Verse:
Verse 1. Praise the LORD! Praise God in His sanctuary; Praise Him in His mighty expanse.

1 Prayer: Father, You are worthy of all praise. You are near and far. You abide in me as a temple of Your Holy Spirit, and You fill all of creation to its most distant extent. You are on high and You are down low. And I am so thankful, since I seem to be everywhere and in between. Thank You for being here now. I praise You for Your presence in me and around me. I will praise You today as I remember Your nearness.

Psalm 149

1 Chapter: Psalm 149

1 Verse:
Verse 4. For the LORD takes pleasure in His people; He will beautify the afflicted ones with salvation.

1 Prayer: Thank You, Father, for making me one of Your people. The difference that makes in my life and in Yours is difficult to fathom. Considering how ugly and painful I and my afflictions seem to be, it is rather incongruous to think that You take pleasure in me and make beauty out of them. I know You have given me salvation, and I am thankful. And though alienation from You is the biggest affliction anyone could ever face, it still doesn't mean that with that settled I don't suffer these others. And I need You to save me from them, too. Sure, I'll survive if You don't. I'll still love You and praise You and serve You. But what I want most is for You to hear and answer me about this need. Beautify this situation, please. I know Your grace is sufficient for me to live on in affliction. But Your power is sufficient, too. Show us some of that power on our behalf, please.

Psalm 148

1 Chapter: Psalm 148

1 Verse:
Verse 13. Let them praise the name of the LORD, for His name alone is exalted; His glory is above earth and heaven.

1 Prayer: Father, let me praise Your name. You alone are higher than all other things, even the things that oppress and discourage me. That makes me think that maybe You might remove some of them. You certainly are able to do so. So why don't You, Father. Wouldn't it be nice to relieve some of the pressure down here? If You did so, You know I would praise You even more. You know I would exalt Your name and give You all the glory. So why don't You? Obviously, You don't need any more glory and exaltation. You are as high as You can go. But what about what I need? Don't I need an answer here? It sure feels like I do. Yet, what if You withhold Your hand? What then? I have no where else to go. And You know I am going to praise You no matter what. Help me to praise You no matter what.

Psalm 147

1 Chapter: Psalm 147

1 Verse:
Verse 3. He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.

1 Prayer: Father, if my bones were broken, I'd go to a doctor. If my body was sick, medicine might help me. Even if my thoughts were not right, a counselor, a therapist, a psychologist might do. But brokenheartedness is a sorrow and a wound too deep for human healers. My heart is the very core of who I am. It isn't some part of me that needs to be fixed; it is me, all of me. The very depths of my being, the entire existence of my life from its beginning to this moment right now has gone all askew. Who will straighten it out again for me, if not You, Father? You made me. You have been with me the entire way through. I know You will make a way for me now. I don't know what it is, but You have to do it. Because I don't know what it is, You have to do it. Heal my broken heart and bind up my sorrows. They are too many to count and too deep for words, but they are neither too many nor too great for You. Thank You, Lord. I love You.

Psalm 146

1 Chapter: Psalm 146

1 Verse:
Verse 5. How blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the LORD his God.

1 Prayer: Father, You are our help. You are the one we are looking to and trusting in. You are the one we cry out to when it seems all hope is lost. We hope in You. And that makes us blessed. That makes all the difference. Apart from You there is no hope, there is little we can do. But with You, You say we can do all things for nothing is impossible with God. Well, sometimes it seems like what we're asking for is the impossible. Sometimes it seems like what we're asking for should be the simplest thing in the world. Either way, we are asking You because we know that all good things -- large or small, possible or impossible -- come from You. Help me to bask in my blessedness today. The blessing is not in having the things I hope for or the help I need, but in having the Helper in whom I hope for those things. Forgive me for sometimes wishing I had the other things instead. You are my portion forever. I love You.

Psalm 145

1 Chapter: Psalm 145

1 Verse:
Verse 16. You open Your hand and satisfy the desire of every living thing.

1 Prayer: Father, please open Your hand to us. We have laid all our desire out before You. You know our longing. You are intimately aware of our hope and wish. We wait for You to satisfy us with good. Yet sometimes it feels like the open hand is a slap in the face. Sometimes it feels like instead of an open hand, we get a closed fist. I know things aren't how they feel. I know You know so much better than I do how to give good gifts to Your children. We trust in Your wisdom to give us good in Your best time. Please comfort us in our dissatisfaction, until by Your hand our desire is fulfilled. Thank You, Lord.

Psalm 144

1 Chapter: Psalm 144

1 Verse:
Verse 4. Man is like a mere breath; his days are like a passing shadow.

1 Prayer: Father, I don't know if I am supposed to be encouraged or frightened by this fact. I feel my life fading away. Is time on my side, or against me? I guess it really shouldn't matter. I guess the important thing is that You are on my side, and if You are for us, who can be against us? But why are we still waiting, Lord? Why are so many prayers yet unanswered? So many promises unfulfilled? And time is so short. Father, please consider my frailty. Unlike You, I can't wait forever. I need You now, and if not now, then soon. Come, Lord Jesus. Come quickly. Amen.

Psalm 143

1 Chapter: Psalm 143

1 Verse:
Verse 8. Let me hear Your lovingkindness in the morning; for I trust in You; teach me the way in which I should walk; for to You I lift up my soul.

1 Prayer: Father, we need Your lovingkindness this morning. Lately, our mornings have been cruel; the day begins with doubt and disappointment and unrealized hopes. We trust You; we lift our souls to You. We place our very lives and selves into Your good hands. And while we are thankful for Your unfailing love, we can't help but admit there are other things that we also wish would not fail, yet do so -- over and over again. We know You are teaching us the way to walk, but it is a dark and lonely and rugged way right now. We want a change of scenery. Please, Lord, in Your wisdom and love, kindly give us what we ask.

Psalm 142

1 Chapter: Psalm 142

1 Verse:
Verse 7. "Bring my soul out of prison, so that I may give thanks to Your name; the righteous will surround me, for You will deal bountifully with me."

1 Prayer: Thank You, Father, for the promise of Your bountiful dealings with me. You will do for me more than I deserve, more than I can imagine or anticipate. And, Father, when You do, I will give thanks to You. I will no longer be surrounded by walls and bars and locked doors, but the righteous will surround me. Instead of a prison cell to hem me in, You will give me the freedom of a community of people who love You, a family of those who trust in You. Father, You are making this happen. Help me to trust You to see it through.

Psalm 141

1 Chapter: Psalm 141

1 Verse:
Verse 8. For my eyes are toward You, O GOD, the Lord; in You I take refuge; do not leave me defenseless.

1 Prayer: Thank You, Father, for providing me a refuge of eternal security. Thank You for defending me when I have nothing with which to defend myself. You know I am guilty. I have no case. I have no leg to stand on. By any measure I deserve to have the book thrown at me. But instead I get the best defender, the fairest trial, the lightest sentence -- no sentence at all, full acquittal. I don't know how You do it except by grace, for love, in kindness and mercy. My eyes are toward You so that I can see that love always and learn to live it myself in honor of what You have done for me. Thank You, Father.

1 Verse:
Verse 7. "O GOD the Lord, the strength of my salvation, You have covered my head in the day of battle."

1 Prayer: Thank You, Father, for my salvation. Thank You that the strength of it, the reliability of my being saved comes from You and not from me. Here I am in the midst of the day of battle and I need strength. I need saving. Thank You for giving me cover. Help me to know when to keep my head down and when to rise up and move out.

Psalm 139

1 Chapter: Psalm 139

1 Verse:
Verse 12. Even the darkness is not dark to You, and the night is as bright as the day. Darkness and light are alike to You.

1 Prayer: Father, I guess I shouldn't be so afraid of the dark. If it is all the same to You, then couldn't I just have a bit more light? But whether I walk in light or darkness today, Lord, I am thankful that You walk there with me. I can't understand why You would have me stumbling about where I can't see, yet that's how it is. That's how it is going to be, and I have to learn to be okay with it. Teach me to know that You walk beside me even in the midst of darkness. Thank You, Father.

1 Chapter: Psalm 138

1 Verse:
Verse 8. The LORD will accomplish what concerns me; Your lovingkindness, O LORD, is everlasting; do not forsake the works of Your hands.

1 Prayer: Father, thank You for this psalm of thanksgiving on this day of Thanksgiving. Thank You for being intimately acquainted with all my concerns. Thank You for being eternally committed to me in love and kindness. Thank You for not forsaking me whom You are making. Thank You for making me and making me Yours. Thank You that You still have Your hands on me, working on me faithfully, diligently, patiently, gently. I love You, Father. My concerns are all in Your hands. Accomplish what concerns me, please. Psalm 137

1 Chapter: Psalm 137

1 Verse:
Verse 4. How can we sing the LORD's song in a foreign land?

1 Prayer: Father, teach me how to sing Your song in the midst of this land where I live. It is not my home -- my home is in heaven. This is a foreign land, a far country, in which I am but a pilgrim and a sojourner. I am in this world, but not of it. Is that why it is so hard for me to get comfortable here? Does that explain my unhappiness? I want to know peace -- Your peace -- and I know it has to come from You. In this world I have trouble, but You have overcome the world. Overcome my troubled spirit, Father, and grant me peace. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. Here I will sing Your song.

Verse 1. Give thanks to the LORD, for He is good, for His lovingkindness is everlasting.

1 Prayer: Father, we are so thankful for Your goodness. Nothing else matters except that Your lovingkindness is everlasting. Your enduring love makes alll things endurable. Your unfailing devotion makes my failures not nearly so frightening. Your unbroken covenant makes my broken heart mend as I trust and find you faithful again and again and again. You are good, and I want to live a good life of great thanksgiving to You. Thank You for this day with which I have to live. Psalm 135

1 Chapter: Psalm 135

1 Verse:
Verse 6. Whatever the LORD pleases, He does, in heaven and in earth, in the seas and in all deeps.

1 Prayer: Father, we are praying that You would do as we please. We're praying that whatever pleases You would also please us. You chose to be our Father. You chose to be a Father who hears. And so we are praying, knowing that You are listening. And we're wondering what You are doing, what You are going to do. Please, Father, may You in Your grace and wisdom grant us what we ask in such a way that we are both pleased -- You and us. If this thing we're asking for pleases You, then we know it will be done. Verse 1. Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brothers to dwell together in unity!

1 Prayer: Father, may we please behold the goodness and pleasure of life in community with one another. Help us to live out the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. Let those who are lonely and those who are in conflict all come together as one to find a common life of loving and serving You. May we learn that loving and serving one another is loving and serving You. Thank You, Father, for being bigger than all our differences. 1 Chapter: Psalm 132

1 Verse:
Verse 14. "This is My resting place forever; here I will dwell, for I have desired it.

1 Prayer: Thank You, Father, for resting Your Spirit upon me forever. You dwell in me as I abide in You. I don't understand how You do it. I can't comprehend why You do it, except that You love me. You have desired to be with me, within me, close to me forever. Even before I desired to be near You, You had given Your Son to die to make it possible. 1 Chapter: Psalm 131

1 Verse:
Verse 3O. Israel, hope in the LORD from this time forth and forever.

1 Prayer: Father, I wish I could pray the previous two verses of this psalm. Yet, I know they do not describe me very well. My soul is neither composed nor quiet. My involvements seem far too great for my powers of comprehension. Yet, if there is one thing I can do, it is to hope in You. I am trusting You to teach me to compose and quiet my soul. 1 Chapter: Psalm 130

1 Verse:
Verse 7. O Israel, hope in the LORD; for with the LORD there is lovingkindness, and with Him is abundant redemption.

1 Prayer: Father, I keep forgetting that Your redemption is abundant. Your lovingkindness is fully sufficient for my sinful weakness. You do not forget my hope in You, no matter how small and fragile and unworthy it may be. I am so thankful, Father, that You hear prayer and show goodness to me when I least deserve it. Teach me to be ever watchful for Your working on my behalf. Teach me to hope in You even when I don't see Your works. Teach me to be thankful for things I haven't seen. Psalm 129

1 Chapter: Psalm 129

1 Verse:
Verse 4. The LORD is righteous; He has cut in two the cords of the wicked.

1 Prayer: Father, I keep feeling the plow on my back. I keep getting rundown, run over. I feel as though I am running out of time, energy, and ability. The trajectory of these lengthy furrows goes way back to my youth. How am I going to get free of them? Many times and in many ways they have buried me over and over and over again. Yet, have they prevailed? Somehow they are ever on the verge of prevailing, yet You have cut their cords in two. You break the stranglehold at the very last second. You are righteous. You relent. You redeem. You rescue. You restore. The wicked will attempt to tie me down for good, but You will cut every cord. Thank You for being faithful.

Psalm 127

1 Chapter: Psalm 127

1 Verse:
Verse 1. Unless the LORD builds the house, they labor in vain who build it; unless the LORD guards the city, the watchman keeps awake in vain.

1 Prayer: Father, I need You to work on my behalf. I need You to take away the vanity of my labor. Nothing is sound apart from You. All the edifices I erect crumble. All the time I spend is wasted, when You are not at work within it, within me. Jesus says You are always working, and I believe Him. But I'm like a watchman who stays up all night to see something that never materializes. Perhaps I'm looking for the wrong thing, or in the wrong place or at the wrong time. Maybe I don't know what to look for. Maybe Your help comes unlooked for and unseen. Whatever it is, Father, I trust You to work on my behalf. I trust You to be in the midst of my seemingly meaningless labors. You are the only One who redeems all time, all misplaced effort. Thank You for redeeming me and mine.

Psalm 126

1 Chapter: Psalm 126

1 Verse:
Verse 4a. Restore our captivity, O LORD.

1 Prayer: Father, how do You restore what is lost? How do You undo what has already been done? Time spent shut up in captivity is irrevocably gone. The past is more unchanging and unmoving than any iron bars or steel chains. And yet, here I am praying for restoration in the midst of the locust years. Somehow You can redeem them. Somehow You already have. I don't see how it is possible, though I believe that it is. But my faith is weak. Help my unbelief.

1 Verse:
Verse 8. Our help is in the name of the LORD, Who made heaven and earth.

1 Prayer: Help, Father. I'm calling out Your name, because it is only in You that I find the help that I need. You are the Creator of all things. You made me, and You are acquainted with all my neediness. What can I do but cast myself upon You for mercy and grace to help in time of need? Lord, it was no difficulty for You to make everything that is. It certainly seems like it would be no difficulty for You to meet my deepest needs. Please be a help to me now. Psalm 123

1 Chapter: Psalm 123

1 Verse:
Verse 2. Behold, as the eyes of servants look to the hand of their master, as the eyes of a maid to the hand of her mistress, so our eyes look to the LORD our God, until He is gracious to us.

1 Prayer: Father, You have been gracious. You have already given me more than I deserve, more than I can ask or imagine, more than I can ever feel worthy of receiving. And yet, despite all the grace You have given, I still look to You. I still need more grace. I don't mean to diminish, depreciate or devalue all You have already done for me in Christ. But I am still looking to You, still waiting until You are gracious to me. Is that alright with You? Do You mind if I ask for even more grace? I trust from what You've already been willing to give that perhaps You are not unwilling to give even a little more. If so, then I pray that You have merciful eyes when You look back at me. Because I am looking to You until You are gracious to me. Be gracious to me, Father, please. You know what I need. Thank You, and I love You.

Psalm 121

1 Chapter: Psalm 121

1 Verse:
Verse 7. The LORD will protect you from all evil; He will keep your soul.

1 Prayer: Father, this sounds almost too good to be true. But I know Your promises are sure. So I want to thank You for keeping my soul. Sometimes it feels lost, cast aside, forgotten. But I know by Your Word that You keep it safe and secure in Your possession forever. I trust You to protect me. But You know how strong my self-protective impulses are. And You know how misguided and misdirected they can be. Please help me to trust You more for the comfort and safety that I need, and not to seek it in other things. Protect me from all evil. Keep my soul.

Psalm 120

1 Chapter: Psalm 120

1 Verse:
Verse 7. I am for peace, but when I speak, they are for war.

1 Prayer: Father, You are the giver of perfect peace that surpasses understanding. I am in need of it. Silence the voices of war that echo in my life -- voices of an enemy who seeks only to steal, kill and destroy. Yours is the voice I need to hear. I need to hear You speak Your words of comfort and peace to my decimated soul. Prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. Thank You, Father.

Psalm 119

1 Chapter: Psalm 119

1 Verse:
Verse 169. Let my cry come before You, O LORD; give me understanding according to Your word.

1 Prayer: Father, there are so many things I want to understand -- Your word very much being one of them. And yet, I can understand none of them well, unless I know them in Your truth. I need Your truth, Father, to give me understanding.

Psalm 118

1 Chapter: Psalm 118

1 Verse:
Verse 24. This is the day which the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.

1 Prayer: Father, You made this day so that I might be joyful and glad. You made it so that You might be glorified and praised and thanked. And since it is Your everlasting lovingkindness for which You desire to be praised, I know that it is so that You can shower all Your creation with Your perfect and unending grace, mercy and love that You have made this day. Thank You for including me in it. I love You!

Psalm 117

1 Chapter: Psalm 117

1 Verse:
Verse 2. For His lovingkindness is great toward us, and the truth of the LORD is everlasting. Praise the LORD!

1 Prayer: How simple can it be, Father? You are love so great that nothing -- not even my sometimes wicked self -- can get in Your way. Your love prevails over us. You have triumphed over me, conquered my rebellion, sin, disaster and shame -- and not just for now but for all time. Please help me to remember how simple it all is. Thank You, Father!

Psalm 116

1 Chapter: Psalm 116

1 Verse:
Verse 9. I shall walk before the LORD in the land of the living.

1 Prayer: Here I am, Father, in the land of the living. And I find myself faced with the challenge and the promise of walking before You. I want it to be easier than it is. I am ashamed sometimes at how difficult I find it to be. I guess I shouldn't be surprised. But I long for the blessed hope of walking at ease, in perfect peace in Your perfect kingdom. I know I am not there yet, but I also know that, by Your grace, I am closer than it seems sometimes. You are closer than You appear. Behold! the kingdom of God is in our midst. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. In this world I have all kinds of trouble, Lord, but You have overcome the world. Thank You.

Psalm 115

1 Chapter: Psalm 115

1 Verse:
Verse 1. Not to us, O LORD, not to us, but to Your name give glory because of Your lovingkindness, because of Your truth.

1 Prayer: Father, I am so incredibly thankful that Your glory derives not from me and my faithfulness, but from Your own goodness and truth. If it were up to me, You might never receive the glory You deserve -- not for lack of trying, but simply out of my own weakness, frailty, failure and want. I have sometimes been over-zealous for Your glory, Lord, and it has done little to honor You. It is not through my strivings, but rather by Your grace that You are most sufficiently glorified. It is through Your unlimited kindness to undeserving people like me that most reveals the glory of Your name. And I am thankful, Father. Help me not to seek Your glory through my self-righteousness, but through Your lovingkindness and Your truth.

Psalm 114

1 Chapter: Psalm 114

1 Verse:
Verse 8. Who turned the rock into a pool of water, the flint into a fountain of water.

1 Prayer: Rock into river, flint into fountain, stone into stream, boulder into babbling brook -- Father, You have a way with making hard and solid things liquid. And Lord, You know I need it now. I am stuck, my heart frozen, my mind paralyzed, my body statuesque in my habitual stubbornness. I am looking to You to crack me up, to break me down, to pulverize my pride until only Your love and grace spill out. Demolish the dam that keeps the flood of Your living water pent up inside me. Lord, I want to flow in the motions of Your divine love today. "Lay Your crushing hand, Your mighty hand, on me gently." Please. I love You. Thank You for saving me.

Psalm 113

1 Chapter: Psalm 113

1 Verse:
Verse 6. Who humbles Himself to behold the things that are in heaven and in the earth?

1 Prayer: Thank You, Father, for Your great humility. Your glory is exalted ever higher the more You humble Yourself lower. Sometimes I feel like I am the lowest of the low, Father. It seems like You would never come all the way down here to witness my condition firsthand. Yet that is exactly what You do. I fear it at the same time I welcome it. I don't want You to see the squalor in which I live. And in some cases I've chosen this for myself, and I don't want You to see the rotten fruit of my foolish choices. But You have promised not to condescend in order to condemn. You have come down to give life, to seek and find what was lost, to repair what was broken, to reclaim what had been forfeited away, to redeem to Yourself what had been deemed not Your own, to renew what was fading out into oblivion and return it to abundant life again. That's me, Father. I am Yours.

Psalm 112

1 Chapter: Psalm 112

1 Verse:
Verse 1. Praise the LORD! How blessed is the man who fears the LORD, who greatly delights in His commandments.

1 Prayer: Father, this verse calls me to praise You, fear You, and delight in You. To praise You is to give expression to Your exalted status over all things. To fear You is act in the recognition of that status. To delight in You is to take great pleasure and joy in in praising and fearing You. Father, forgive me for so often giving expression to the voice of my own condition, without taking into account Yours. Forgive me for failing to fear You enough to act as I know I should. Forgive me for begrudging You the obedience and honor You deserve. Teach me to delight to do Your good, pleasing and perfect will.

Psalm 111

1 Chapter: Psalm 111

1 Verse:
Verse 7. The works of His hands are truth and justice; all His precepts are sure.

1 Prayer: Father, I need a hand. I know even as I read it that I believe this is true. But all around me I think I only see falsehood and injustice. What good is it to me to know that Your precepts are sure, if I am so unsure about what exactly they are? I believe Your works are true and just, but that doesn't explain why they are what they are. If what You do is just, then I must be getting what I deserve. But I can't even tell if what I'm getting is a blessing or a curse, a reward or a punishment, or none of the above. It all looks so uncertain and suspect. How will I know the works of Your hands when I see them? Or is it all the work of Your hands? Are You really always at work, everywhere and in and through all things? How can You possibly be at work in this thing? Where is the truth and the justice in my circumstance? I'm sure they are there, but I'm unsure what they are. So I need You to help me. Please help.

Psalm 110

1 Chapter: Psalm 110

1 Verse:
Verse 3. Your people will volunteer freely in the day of Your power; in holy array, from the womb of the dawn, Your youth are to You as the dew.

1 Prayer: Father, when is the day of Your power? I keep waiting for You; are You waiting for me? I am Your people. I volunteer freely to serve You. Am I to You as the dew? Do I bring a fresh sheen of water, a dripping of Your Spirit onto the cold ground, over the buried seed? Or am I to You like the drought, a constant disappointment, a desperate yearning for relief that never quite comes? Father, Your people -- including this one especially -- are in dire need of You. Please come and give me freedom from what constrains my will so that I may willingly give You all of myself freely. I love You, Father.

Psalm 109

1 Chapter: Psalm 109

1 Verse:
Verse 31. For He stands at the right hand of the needy, to save him from those who judge his soul.

1 Prayer: Thank You, Father, for saving me from judgment. The verdict is already in -- there is no way my soul can escape the penalty of my guilty plea. Except through the blood of Christ. Unless You stand beside me -- at my right hand -- I am condemned. Thank You for standing by.

Psalm 108

1 Chapter: Psalm 108

1 Verse:
Verse 12. Oh give us help against the adversary, for deliverance by man is in vain.

1 Prayer: Father, You know my adversary. You know how much help I need in any given day to keep from falling into my enemy's clutches. I need Your help, because I can't deliver myself. I need You to save me. So, please save me today, from whatever threatens to control, cajole or cow me into straying from You. I will stay close by, praying and waiting for Your deliverance to come. Thank You that I know it will.
