Revelation 21:6-8

1 Passage: Revelation 21:6-8

1 Verse: Verse 7. "He who overcomes will inherit these things, and I will be his God and he will be My son."

1 Prayer:
Father -- please keep me from using that form of address in vain. I want You to be my God and me Your son, but I'm not so sure how I'm doing at the whole overcoming thing. I feel more overcome than not. Please help me by Your Spirit to replace my cowardice with Your courage, my doubt with Your faith, my ugliness with Your beauty, my malice with Your love, my deceptions with Your truth. You say You will allow those who thirst to drink from the springs of the water of life without cost. "I'm very thirsty, but I can't complain. Stuck in the desert but expecting rain . . ." (Bill Mallonee, Bethlehem Steel)

1 Passage: John 4:10-14

1 Verse: Verse 14. "but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall never thirst; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life."

1 Prayer:
Father, please forgive me for looking all around for water to quench my thirst -- even to the point of hewing my own broken cisterns -- when You say the living water is already springing up inside of me. Help me draw upon Your Spirit when I feel desiccated by the desert sun, the devil winds, the lengthening drought. Please help me clear away all the doubts and worries and fears that clog and choke the free flow of living water from the well of Your Spirit.

1 Passage: Revelation 7:13-17

1 Verse: Verse 17. "for the Lamb in the center of the throne will be their shepherd, and will guide them to springs of the water of life; and God will wipe every tear from their eyes."

1 Prayer:
Thank You, Jesus, for being my shepherd. Thank You for being my sacrificial lamb. You know best how to follow God's leading in complete trust, and now I must learn to do the same as I follow after You. Thank You for being my ever-present teacher. Please guide me today beside streams of living water. Fill me up so full with your fountain of life springing up within me that the water wells up in my eyes -- not in tears for myself, but tears of joy and sorrow for those things that please and pain Your heart. Help me not to fear honest tears, as I know You will someday wipe them all away.

1 Prayer:
Father, all these good things and more belong to You. They come from You and return to You. Whatever I can do today to bless You, please give me the grace and wisdom and courage to do it. However I might give You glory, please show me. In everything I encounter today, I will keep an attitude of thanksgiving to You. I will honor You as best I can. Psalm 23:1-6

1 Passage: Psalm 23:1-6

1 Verse: Verse 1. The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not want.

1 Prayer:
Thank You, Father, for watching over me -- protecting, providing, guiding -- as my shepherd. It is by faith in Your perfect wisdom and power that I resolve not to desire more than what I have. You make it possible for me to live without coveting. And yet Your Word is clear -- suffering need is a part of even (or perhaps especially) the most faithful follower's life. So please teach me, as You taught our brother Paul, how to be content in whatever circumstances I am. No matter what I lack, no matter where I am or am not, no matter how much it hurts to not have what I need, You are my Good Shepherd. Thank You, Father. I shall not want.

1 Passage: 1 Peter 2:11-17

1 Verse: Verse 11. Beloved, I urge you as aliens and strangers to abstain from fleshly lusts which wage war against the soul.

1 Prayer:
Father, You know I don't belong here. This is not my home, my country. My citizenship is in heaven. My King is Jesus Christ, raised to the right hand of Your throne where he rules in authority over every other power that can be named, either in heaven or on earth. I'm trying to keep the peace in this place, but I'm an alien and stranger. I'm at a disadvantage here. My opponents are the home team -- it's their field, their turf, they know the terrain. I'm still trying to find my way. So please help me. Tell me, how do I honor You by honoring those who dishonor You by dishonoring those You have also commanded me to honor?

1 Prayer:
Thank You, Father, for Your grace to us in making us holy priests serving in Your spiritual house. The very thing that Uzziah was cursed with leprosy for doing, we are created and called and commanded to do -- to offer sacrifices to You through Jesus. 1 Passage: Matthew 1:18-25

1 Verse:
Verse 19. And Joseph her husband, being a righteous man and not wanting to disgrace her, planned to send her away secretly.

1 Prayer:
Thank You, Father, for the example of Joseph -- a righteous man who did not flaunt his righteousness before others for the sake of honoring himself, but was intent on having at least some of his goodness go unrecognized out of compassion for those whose unrighteousness might by contrast cause them shame, disgrace and dishonor. Forgive me, Father, for not being more like this. Forgive me for wanting sometimes to use righteousness as a weapon of subjugation, to impel others to recognize or honor me and my goodness at the expense of their disgrace. Please give me wisdom to know when to "let [my] light shine before men" and when to "beware of practicing [my] righteousness before men."

1 Verse:
Verse 9. And having been made perfect, He became to all those who obey Him the source of eternal salvation

1 Prayer:
Thank You, Jesus, for becoming the source of my eternal salvation. You have given me a gift that far exceeds my ability to earn or appreciate -- a gift which often leaves me perplexed as to how to comprehend its staggering reality. Somehow, my salvation involves me in a process of becoming like You through my obedience to Your Spirit and living Word. But You are perfect and have been made perfect by learning obedience through suffering. How can I expect to learn obedience like Yours if not through suffering, too? So, please, Jesus, be near me in my trials and troubles and struggles and sufferings. Help me to consider them all joy. Help me to be a comfort to others who also suffer.

Verse 11. The LORD said to him, "Who has made man's mouth? Or who makes him mute or deaf, or seeing or blind? Is it not I, the LORD?"

1 Prayer:
Thank You, Father, for making me. And thank You for the promise that You can make up for whatever I lack. I have by my own selfishness and sin made myself less than You intended me to be. But now, Lord, I trust You to compensate for me. Your power is made perfect in weakness, even though I feel like I have perfected the art of being weak. Father, please be my strength. Stop me from using my faults and frailties and failures as excuses for not doing the things You have created me to do. 1 Prayer:
Thank You, Jesus, for sympathizing with my weakness. Our shared humanity gives me confidence to draw near to our Heavenly Father's throne -- the same throne to which You sit at the right hand in resurrected glory. Thank You for promising to give mercy and grace in my time of need. Forgive me for failing to ask. So often I fail to recognize or am ashamed to admit my need until it is too late. I'm grateful, Father, that You see everything. I'm sorry if Your view of me sometimes isn't pretty, but, thankfully, You don't see me without also seeing Jesus' sacrifice on my behalf. I am open and laid bare before You, and yet covered and clothed in the righteousness of Christ. 1 Passage: Psalm 103:15-18

1 Verse:
Verse 15. As for man, his days are like grass; as a flower of the field, so he flourishes.

1 Prayer:
Father, I know the point of this passage is to establish a contrast between the temporality of our human physical life and the eternality of Your divine spiritual love and life. And I'm incredibly thankful that Your love is eternal, because it is on the basis of Your eternal love that I have been promised eternal life together with You. But this verse also makes me think about my day today. If all my days are like grass, what is one day? Very little. And yet, it is everything I have for now. And I want to make it all count for You, Father. I want to flourish. I'm not sure if my flower is in bloom, but I want to try to do something good with this day that You have made and given to me. You say You've prepared good works beforehand for me to walk in. Please help me walk in faith that that is so. Father, please help my faith to flourish to the benefit of others and especially to You.

1 Prayer:
Thank You, Father, for Your lovingkindness and compassion. You are better to me than I fully understand or faithfully express. Thank You for knowing me intimately and perfectly. I am grateful that You are mindful of my weakness and that You remember how I was made. It is only right for me to remember as well that You have made me. And You have made me for Yourself. You have removed my sins from me. Help me to do the same, and remove my sins from me -- as far as the east is from the west. The two cannot exist in the same place at the same time. Help me make it so for those sins that seem to so easily entangle me. And help me to show the same compassion to others made just like me -- created by You from the dust of the ground in order to be recipients of Your love and mercy.

1 Passage: Psalm 22:18 with John 19:23-24

1 Verse:
Verse 18. They divide my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots.

1 Prayer:
How thoroughly You were ravaged, Jesus. Not even Your clothes, which were likely not worth very much by this point -- torn by whips, shredded by splinters from a heavy wooden cross, stained with blood and spit and sweat -- were taken from You. Thank You for enduring such complete humiliation and loss for me. That was to have been my fate, but no more, thanks to You. I am forever grateful.

Psalm 22:11-17

1 Passage: Psalm 22:11-17

1 Verse:
Verse 11. Be not far from me, for trouble is near; for there is none to help.

1 Prayer:
Father, You are always near. You heard and answered Jesus' prayer; even as he was dying on the cross for the sin of the world, You were not far from Him. My troubles are so much less; how can I doubt that You are near to me? You are the One I look to for help, and I know Your help comes from many places, in many forms, through many ways, by many people. Help me to recognize Your close presence and Your means of help in the midst of my troubles. Help me to be near to those who are troubled, to help them as You make possible by Your Spirit. Thank You, Father.

Psalm 22:6-10 with Matthew 27:39-43

1 Passage: Psalm 22:6-10 with Matthew 27:39-43

1 Verse:
Verse 39. And those passing by were hurling abuse at Him, wagging their heads

1 Prayer:
Jesus, I appreciate Your sacrifice on my behalf. Thank You for enduring so much pain and suffering, abuse and scorn, shame and ridicule for me. I know You went through all of that because of Your love -- love for God our Father, and love for us, His lost and fallen people. I don't want to hurl further abuse on You by neglecting the great power of the gift You gave us at the cross, but I know that sometimes I do. Sometimes I forget that You already suffered for my sin. Sometimes I wonder whether Your grace is enough for me. Forgive me, Lord Jesus, for not recognizing the infinite value of Your sacrifice. Help me to realize that infinite value in my life today and always.

1 Passage: Psalm 22:1-5 with Matthew 27:46

1 Verse:
Verse 3. Yet You are holy, O You who are enthroned upon the praises of Israel.

1 Prayer:
Father, You are holy. No matter what it may look like to me. To me sometimes You seem distant, silent, angry, unresponsive. But despite what it seems, You are who You are. And who You are is holy. You are love. You are present. You are near. You are always working. Help me trust that You are all that You say You are, even when You seem not to be.

1 Verse:
Verse 28. And they approached the village where they were going, and He acted as though He were going farther.

1 Prayer:
Jesus, how many times do I fall for Your act? You test my faith by seeming as if You are going to leave me behind, yet You only need a simple invitation -- or perhaps and impassioned urging? -- to stay instead and fellowship with me. Forgive me for not urging You to stay. Forgive me for thinking You would ever leave me behind. You are the Good Shepherd who leaves the flock of ninety-nine to seek out the one lamb who is lost. Thank You, Jesus, for seeking me out. Please help me return the favor by seeking to always stay with You.

1 Passage: Acts 9:1-16

1 Verse:
Verse 6. but get up and enter the city, and it will be told you what you must do.

1 Prayer:
Lord Jesus, this seems like a strange thing to say at a time like this. Is this a test? Do You give such small and cryptic instruction just to see if we believe You enough to follow no questions asked? Or are You intentionally leaving room for Your people to play a part? What You did not do directly on the road, Ananias did on Your behalf in the city. Lord, help me to do the little things You ask of me, however disappointingly small and vague they may seem. Help me to recognize when You are intentionally leaving room for Your people to work on Your behalf. Help me to be a faithful and obedient worker for You.

1 Prayer:

Like the donkey on which You rode into Jerusalem, You carry the weight of another -- of all others -- upon Yourself. All our sins and fears and shame and doubt and regret and pain is Yours. Verse 5. "For God knows that in the day you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil."

1 Prayer:
Father, please help me to recognize lies when I hear them. I am susceptible to wanting the things the serpent here promises Eve -- I want to see with open eyes, I want to have God-like knowledge. And just as those desires became the bait the serpent used to ensnare Eve, I am in danger of being misled also. Help me to look to You. Help me keep my eyes shut and walk by faith and not by sight whenever I am tempted. 1 Passage: Leviticus 19:1-4

1 Verse:
Verse 2. "Speak to all the congregation of the sons of Israel and say to them, 'You shall be holy, for I the LORD your God am holy.'"

1 Prayer:
Father, is this a command or a promise? Or both. You are holy and You are my God. You shall make me holy, even as You have been and will forever be my God. Insofar as this is a command -- "Be holy!" -- it contains the promise that You have made me able to obey it. But keep me ever mindful that righteousness comes by faith, lest I try to summon or conjure or imitate Your holiness in my own strength. We both know that won't work; it leads only to hypocrisy, weariness and self-condemnation. But just as You speak and what You say becomes real, Father, please make Your holiness real in my life. Let there be holiness.
