Psalm 97

1 Passage: Psalm 97

1 Verse: Verse 2. Clouds and thick darkness surround Him; righteousness and justice are the foundation of His throne.

1 Prayer:
Thank You, Father, for establishing Your eternal rule and reign upon the foundation of perfect justice and righteousness. Even when Your holy throne is obscured from our understanding by the veil of mystery that surrounds You, we trust You to do all things well and make all things right. We even draw near to that throne of grace to find mercy and help in time of need. Please, Father, help us to gain from our trust in You the wisdom and courage to implement Your righteousness and justice in our lives by loving others at all costs, as You have commanded and demonstrated in Christ.

Psalm 96

1 Passage: Psalm 96

1 Verse: Verse 13. Before the LORD, for He is coming, For He is coming to judge the earth He will judge the world in righteousness And the peoples in His faithfulness.

1 Prayer:
Father, You alone in all the world are the righteous Judge of all peoples. You alone see all and know all. Please forgive me for trying to judge others for myself, without all the facts and without all the righteousness. You will faithfully administer justice when You come. For now, we do the best we can, but far from much that is good and lasting and meaningful. But, Father, despite all that, please help us to lovingly and courageously and wisely uphold Your truth without judging and condemning those who deny it.

Psalm 95:7b-11

1 Passage: Psalm 95:7b-11

1 Verse: Verse 8. Do not harden your hearts, as at Meribah, as in the day of Massah in the wilderness

1 Prayer:
Father, I would like to hear Your voice today. But if I would . . . I must not harden my heart. Please help me keep a tender heart before You today. Even if I go wandering in the wilderness, even when I find myself at a place of strife or in a time of temptation, I will keep a gentle, humble heart. Of course, that means my poor soft heart will hurt all the more. But if it also means I will get to hear Your voice, then it will all be worth it.

Psalm 95:3-5

1 Passage: Psalm 95:3-5

1 Verse: Verse 6. Come, let us worship and bow down, let us kneel before the LORD our Maker.

1 Prayer:
Thank You, Father, for making me. I'd rather be than not be, though sometimes I'd rather not be me. I fear I've made quite a mess of what You have made for Yourself. But I'm grateful You still want me to come to You to worship and bow down. Perhaps I haven't made so little of myself. Perhaps You would make more of me than I would. Please help me, Father. Make me over again. Make me more like You.

1 Verse: Verse 2. Let us come before His presence with thanksgiving, let us shout joyfully to Him with psalms.

1 Prayer:
Father, You are ever-present, everywhere. And in Your presence, my proper attitude of worship is to be grateful. Help me to be ever-thankful, all the time, wherever I may be, in whatever circumstances I find myself. Wherever I am, You are there. That alone is enough to be thankful for.

1 Passage: Job 34:10-12 & Job 42:1-6

1 Verse: Verse 6. "Therefore I retract, and I repent in dust and ashes."

1 Prayer:
Thank You, Father, for the example of righteous Job. If he, a man so much greater and more faithful to You than I am, had to retract his false statements about You, how much more so must I. Please help me to cultivate and maintain a repentant heart, knowing that no matter how close we get, no matter how much I think I am growing in knowledge or understanding, that You are ever greater and beyond complete comprehension.

Job 42:7-10

1 Passage: Job 42:7-10

1 Verse: Verse 8. "Now therefore, take for yourselves seven bulls and seven rams, and go to My servant Job, and offer up a burnt offering for yourselves, and My servant Job will pray for you, for I will accept him so that I may not do with you according to your folly, because you have not spoken of Me what is right, as My servant Job has."

1 Prayer:
Father, thank You for accepting Jesus' sacrifice to atone for my sin. I have not spoken of you what is right, nor have I been righteous and faithful as Job was in the midst of his suffering. I have cursed You to Your face and kindled Your wrath. But I have also received Your grace. Thank You for not doing with me as my sins deserve. Thank You for allowing Jesus to receive the penalty that I have earned. Even today, Father, I beg You not to treat me according to my folly. Spare me from my sin and its consequences for the sake of Your name. Undo the wrong I have done and instead allow me to do right in Your name.

1 Prayer:

Seal it for Thy courts above."

1 Verse: Verse 7. "He who overcomes will inherit these things, and I will be his God and he will be My son."

1 Prayer:
Father -- please keep me from using that form of address in vain. I want You to be my God and me Your son, but I'm not so sure how I'm doing at the whole overcoming thing. I feel more overcome than not. Please help me by Your Spirit to replace my cowardice with Your courage, my doubt with Your faith, my ugliness with Your beauty, my malice with Your love, my deceptions with Your truth. You say You will allow those who thirst to drink from the springs of the water of life without cost. "I'm very thirsty, but I can't complain. Stuck in the desert but expecting rain . . ." 1 Prayer:
Father, please forgive me for looking all around for water to quench my thirst -- even to the point of hewing my own broken cisterns -- when You say the living water is already springing up inside of me. 1 Prayer:
Thank You, Jesus, for being my shepherd. Thank You for being my sacrificial lamb. You know best how to follow God's leading in complete trust, and now I must learn to do the same as I follow after You. Thank You for being my ever-present teacher. Please guide me today beside streams of living water. 1 Passage: Psalm 23:1-6

1 Verse: Verse 1. The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not want.

1 Prayer:
Thank You, Father, for watching over me -- protecting, providing, guiding -- as my shepherd. It is by faith in Your perfect wisdom and power that I resolve not to desire more than what I have. You make it possible for me to live without coveting. And yet Your Word is clear -- suffering need is a part of even (or perhaps especially) the most faithful follower's life. So please teach me, as You taught our brother Paul, how to be content in whatever circumstances I am. No matter what I lack, no matter where I am or am not, no matter how much it hurts to not have what I need, You are my Good Shepherd. Thank You, Father. I shall not want.

1 Verse: Verse 11. Beloved, I urge you as aliens and strangers to abstain from fleshly lusts which wage war against the soul.

1 Prayer:
Father, You know I don't belong here. This is not my home, my country. My citizenship is in heaven. My King is Jesus Christ, raised to the right hand of Your throne where he rules in authority over every other power that can be named, either in heaven or on earth. I'm trying to keep the peace in this place, but I'm an alien and stranger. I'm at a disadvantage here. My opponents are the home team -- it's their field, their turf, they know the terrain. Verse 19. And Joseph her husband, being a righteous man and not wanting to disgrace her, planned to send her away secretly.

1 Prayer:
Thank You, Father, for the example of Joseph -- a righteous man who did not flaunt his righteousness before others for the sake of honoring himself, but was intent on having at least some of his goodness go unrecognized out of compassion for those whose unrighteousness might by contrast cause them shame, disgrace and dishonor. Forgive me, Father, for not being more like this. Forgive me for wanting sometimes to use righteousness as a weapon of subjugation, to impel others to recognize or honor me and my goodness at the expense of their disgrace. 1 Verse:
Verse 9. And having been made perfect, He became to all those who obey Him the source of eternal salvation

1 Prayer:
Thank You, Jesus, for becoming the source of my eternal salvation. You have given me a gift that far exceeds my ability to earn or appreciate -- a gift which often leaves me perplexed as to how to comprehend its staggering reality. Somehow, my salvation involves me in a process of becoming like You through my obedience to Your Spirit and living Word. But You are perfect and have been made perfect by learning obedience through suffering. How can I expect to learn obedience like Yours if not through suffering, too? So, please, Jesus, be near me in my trials and troubles and struggles and sufferings. Help me to consider them all joy. Help me to be a comfort to others who also suffer.

1 Prayer:
Thank You, Father, for making me. And thank You for the promise that You can make up for whatever I lack. I have by my own selfishness and sin made myself less than You intended me to be. But now, Lord, I trust You to compensate for me. Your power is made perfect in weakness, even though I feel like I have perfected the art of being weak. Father, please be my strength. Stop me from using my faults and frailties and failures as excuses for not doing the things You have created me to do. I am Your workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works which You have already prepared for me. Help me to trust that You have also already prepared me for them.

1 Prayer:
I'm grateful, Father, that You see everything. I'm sorry if Your view of me sometimes isn't pretty, but, thankfully, You don't see me without also seeing Jesus' sacrifice on my behalf. I am open and laid bare before You, and yet covered and clothed in the righteousness of Christ. Help me today to be mindful of Your ever-present awareness of me, so that when I am in need I won't hesitate to turn to You. You do not forsake me or abandon me or leave me all alone, but forgive me for forgetting Your nearness.

1 Passage: Genesis 13:10-17

1 Verse:
Verse 17. "Arise, walk about the land through its length and breadth; for I will give it to you."

1 Prayer:
Father, You are the Creator, Maker of heaven and earth and everything in them. Everywhere I go, everything I see belongs to You. You have ultimate authority and absolute power over it all. The things of this world are Yours to give or withhold as You see fit. You may not have promised me possession of a land like You did for Abraham, but there are other gifts You want to give me. There are so many more blessings You have already given. Father, I receive them with thanksgiving. As I go walking about my day, please help me to see with gratitude all the things You have granted me by Your grace. Thank You for blessing me so abundantly.

Verse 10. And, "YOU, LORD, IN THE BEGINNING LAID THE FOUNDATION OF THE EARTH, AND THE HEAVENS ARE THE WORKS OF YOUR HANDS;

1 Prayer:
Father, You are the Creator, Maker of heaven and earth and everything in them, including me. I am one of the works of Your hands and this is the day that the You have made. There is a place for me here and now to do Your will. I am Your workmanship created in Christ Jesus for good works, which You prepared beforehand so that I would walk in them. Please help me, Father, to walk by faith through this day. Help me to fit into Your plan both for me and for others today. There is work for me to do. There are foundations I need to lay. Please help me to be successful in them. Establish for me the works of my hands, just as You have established those of Your own.

1 Verse:
Verse 3. And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature, and upholds all things by the word of His power When He had made purification of sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,

1 Prayer:
Father, there truly is only one like You -- Jesus, Your Son. Your glory shines through His perfect obedience. Your nature is made manifest through Him. Thank You for giving us a picture of Yourself in human flesh in the person of Jesus. And not only the person we see in the pages of Scripture, but the person who by His blood has removed all our sins and who by His word upholds all things. Thank You, Jesus, for upholding me by Your Spirit. And thank You for being my advocate before the Father, seated at the right hand of His throne on high. Advocate for me today. You know my needs.

Psalm 103:15-18

1 Passage: Psalm 103:15-18

1 Verse:
Verse 15. As for man, his days are like grass; as a flower of the field, so he flourishes.

1 Prayer:
Father, I know the point of this passage is to establish a contrast between the temporality of our human physical life and the eternality of Your divine spiritual love and life. And I'm incredibly thankful that Your love is eternal, because it is on the basis of Your eternal love that I have been promised eternal life together with You. But this verse also makes me think about my day today. If all my days are like grass, what is one day? Very little. And yet, it is everything I have for now. And I want to make it all count for You, Father. I want to flourish. I'm not sure if my flower is in bloom, but I want to try to do something good with this day that You have made and given to me. You say You've prepared good works beforehand for me to walk in. Please help me walk in faith that that is so. Father, please help my faith to flourish to the benefit of others and especially to You.

1 Passage: Psalm 103:11-14

1 Verse:
Verse 12. As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us.

1 Prayer:
Thank You, Father, for Your lovingkindness and compassion. You are better to me than I fully understand or faithfully express. Thank You for knowing me intimately and perfectly. I am grateful that You are mindful of my weakness and that You remember how I was made. It is only right for me to remember as well that You have made me. And You have made me for Yourself. You have removed my sins from me. Help me to do the same, and remove my sins from me -- as far as the east is from the west. The two cannot exist in the same place at the same time. Help me make it so for those sins that seem to so easily entangle me. And help me to show the same compassion to others made just like me -- created by You from the dust of the ground in order to be recipients of Your love and mercy.

1 Prayer:
Thank You, Father, for making me one of Your righteous ones. Any righteousness I might claim comes only from You -- by grace, through faith in the name of Jesus. But that doesn't make it any less real or true. I am righteous in Your sight and the way You see it is the way it is. That makes me glad, because I could never get there on my own. The sound of many waters I hear this morning is more gentle than mighty, but it is a beautiful sound nonetheless. Thank You, Father, for waking us with thunder and again with softer rain. 1 Verse:
Verse 18. They divide my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots.

1 Prayer:
How thoroughly You were ravaged, Jesus. Not even Your clothes, which were likely not worth very much by this point -- torn by whips, shredded by splinters from a heavy wooden cross, stained with blood and spit and sweat -- were taken from You. Thank You for enduring such complete humiliation and loss for me. That was to have been my fate, but no more, thanks to You. I am forever grateful.

Verse 11. Be not far from me, for trouble is near; for there is none to help.

1 Prayer:
Father, You are always near. You heard and answered Jesus' prayer; even as he was dying on the cross for the sin of the world, You were not far from Him. My troubles are so much less; how can I doubt that You are near to me? You are the One I look to for help, and I know Your help comes from many places, in many forms, through many ways, by many people. Help me to recognize Your close presence and Your means of help in the midst of my troubles. Help me to be near to those who are troubled, to help them as You make possible by Your Spirit. 1 Verse:
Verse 39. And those passing by were hurling abuse at Him, wagging their heads

1 Prayer:
Jesus, I appreciate Your sacrifice on my behalf. Thank You for enduring so much pain and suffering, abuse and scorn, shame and ridicule for me. I know You went through all of that because of Your love -- love for God our Father, and love for us, His lost and fallen people. I don't want to hurl further abuse on You by neglecting the great power of the gift You gave us at the cross, but I know that sometimes I do. Sometimes I forget that You already suffered for my sin. Sometimes I wonder whether Your grace is enough for me. Forgive me, Lord Jesus, for not recognizing the infinite value of Your sacrifice. 1 Verse:
Verse 6. but get up and enter the city, and it will be told you what you must do.

1 Prayer:
Lord Jesus, this seems like a strange thing to say at a time like this. Is this a test? Do You give such small and cryptic instruction just to see if we believe You enough to follow no questions asked? Or are You intentionally leaving room for Your people to play a part? What You did not do directly on the road, Ananias did on Your behalf in the city. Lord, help me to do the little things You ask of me, however disappointingly small and vague they may seem.
